The three-day festival known as the Chicago Open Air is the “IT” Summer Music Festival for metal and hard core fans. For the second annual Chicago Open Air festival, the venue was at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, IL which is just south of Chicago at took place on July 14-16, 2017. 2017 headliners included: total legends – Kiss on Friday July 14; Korn on Saturday July 15; and Ozzy Osbourne on Sunday July 16! The two stage festival had bands that spanned the genres of old and new metal and hard core. It was incredible to also see Megadeth, Stone Sour, Rob Zombie, Whores, Godsmack and Behemoth all in one weekend.  I loved watching Slayer, Meshuggah and Dillinger Escape Plan bring it to Chicago!

A definite highlight of the weekend other than watching literal rock legends Kiss and Ozzy Osbourne, was watching Dillinger Escape Plan’s last show in Chicago. It was heartbroking when they announced their final tour, but so glad to have the chance to see them one last time. It felt like they were really connecting with the crowd, smiling throughout the screams and appreciating the fans as much as we all adored the set!

The festival was a really great immersive experience, big enough to feel like you had space to roam but not overwhelmingly large that you couldn’t get from stage to stage. One of my favorite parts of the festival, other than the music, was the Metal Tiki Bar (!!!) and the FYE pop up record shop which also hosted band autograph signings. I already can’t wait for next year!
