Copeland at Metro in Chicago
Copeland brought a little bit of my home state, Florida’s sunshine to the Metro last week, playing a solid set spanning their entire career.
Front man Aaron Marsh’s melodies immediately grabbed the audience by their heartstrings as he and the rest of the band held nothing back throughout the night. A really great addition to the lineup was a string trio who’s beautiful performance gave not only Ixora’s songs, but the rest of the set a depth and, of course, an orchestral feeling not often experienced at a rock show.
Speaking of rock show, one of my favorite parts of Copeland’s recordings is how drummer Jonathan Bucklew’s strong and steady playing is the backbone to the intricacies of layers upon layers of melody that Marsh and brothers Bryan and Stephen Laurenson create.
I was disappointed to hear that Bucklew wouldn’t be joining the band on the road for this tour, but thankfully their touring drummer Jordan Butcher is cut from the same cloth. With his power and style, he filled Bucklew’s shoes just fine.
For the majority of the evening, the stage was awash in a blue LED uplighting that resembled moonlight shining across an ocean floor, with incandescent lamps placed sparsely around the stage, creating a somber mood at all the right moments.
Having been a number of years since I’d seen the band live (the last time being in our home state), I’m not at all surprised that their songs still captivate and swoon a crowd, myself included.
