DIRTY HONEY, ALONG WITH MAMMOTH WVH, “YOUNG GUNS” CO-HEADLINE NORTH AMERICAN TOUR
Two of the best new rock bands, Dirty Honey and Mammoth WVH, joined forces to bring their kick-ass rock’n’roll music out on a 33-date co-headline Young Guns North American Tour. The tour is in support of both Dirty Honey and Mammoth WVH’s self-titled debut albums released last year. Both bands’ debut singles occupied the #1 position on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart: Dirty Honey’s “When I’m Gone” and Mammoth WVH’s “Distance”.
On March 16, 2022, Dirty Honey and Mammoth WVH brought the Young Guns co-headline North American Tour to the House of Blues in Chicago.
Show Recap – Dirty Honey
For the Chicago show, Dirty Honey started the night out first. Out of Los Angeles, the bluesy rockers formed in 2017. The band includes: Marc LaBelle on vocals; John Notto on guitars; Justin Smolian on bass; and Corey Coverstone on drums.
From the moment the curtains opened, the packed audience of the House of Blues felt the intense energy of the band, both musically and physically. They used the stage and beyond to their full advantage. LaBelle climbed the PAs on both the right and left to get closer to the audience in the balconies. In addition, he spent some time in the pit to sing with the audience. LaBelle even invited Notto down to the pit. Regarding the setlist, the band came out strong with “Gypsy”. The set included most of their discography with a mix of songs from their EP and Album. Other highlights of the night included:
- Performance of newest single, “Another Last Time”
- Prince cover “Let’s Go Crazy” which they first performed at the NHL Winter Classic in Minneapolis
- Solos by
- Justin Smolian on bass
- Corey Coverstone on drums
- John Notto on guitars with part of “Ten Years Gone” by Led Zeppelin
Show Recap – Mammoth WVH
Next up was Mammoth WVH. If you’ve been living under a rock somewhere, Mammoth WVH is a rock band founded and fronted by Wolfgang Van Halen. Yes, son of the late great Eddie Van Halen. However, this night was not any ordinary show. It was also, Wolfgang’s 31st birthday.
The set covered most of the songs from the self-titled debut album. Kicking it of for the night was “Mammoth”. We’d be amiss if we didn’t mentioned fan favorites, “Epiphany”, “You’re to Blame” and the tribute song to his father, “Distance”. Toward the end of the night, Wolfgang mentioned they were going to play a cover. Fans thought maybe it would be a Van Halen song. However, Wolfgang corrected the audience by stating that although he loves Van Halen, “If you come to a Mammoth show and expect Van Halen, it’s like going to a Foo Fighter’s show and getting pissed because they didn’t play Nirvana.” Instead they went into a cover of Alice in Chains, “Them Bones”. At this point of the set, Wolfgang would normally introduce the band. However, the band turned off his microphone, brought out birthday balloons. Chicago helped celebrate by singing, “Happy Birthday”. In response, “Thank you for the best birthday party I could f*cking ask for!” The night closed out with an arena ready song, “Don’t Back Down”.
With bands like Dirty Honey and Mammoth WVH, along with Greta Van Fleet (see show coverage from 12/12/2018) and The Struts (see show coverage from 11/24/2018), prove that rock’n’roll music very alive and well.
