Matt Nathanson Tour 2022
On August 27, 2022, American Singer-Songwriter Matt Nathanson returned to The Barrymore Theatre in Madison, Wisconsin after a multi-year touring hiatus due to the pandemic. This tour is jointly celebrating a new release and a milestone anniversary of his most famous album. Boston Accent, Nathanson’s recent ten-song album, came out at the end of July commemorating his roots in Boston, Massachusetts. Some Mad Hope, his breakout album from 2007, turned fifteen this year. When it was released, it debuted at #60 on the Billboard Top 200, staying on the charts for thirty-four weeks. Matt Nathanson’s most recognized song from the album “Come On Get Higher” went platinum, selling over 1.8 million copies.
The Barrymore Theatre Show
As the crowd lined up waiting for the doors to open, there were conversations floating around about the last Matt Nathanson show they had been to and how long they had been listening to his music. A group of fans who had purchased front row seats excitedly stated that “[they’ve] listened to Matt since he put out Some Mad Hope and had been to so many of his shows [they] have lost count!”
When the lights dimmed and Nathanson came onto the stage, he glowed over how nice Donovan Woods, his opener hailing from Canada, had said that the crowd was. With everyone cheering wildly, he continued, saying that the venue reminded him of a living room show, casual but lively. Then, the agenda for the evening was laid out: some songs from Boston Accent would be played before Some Mad Hope was played in its entirety.
Hearing Some Mad Hope being performed in its entirety was an incredibly captivating experience. As Matt Nathanson played, he wove the story behind each song on the album into the overall arc of its storybook romance–with all the twists, turns, and heartache that came along with that. Each story was compelling and, in conjunction with the venue size, made for a very intimate and meaningful show for anyone new to Nathanson’s music as well as those who had waited years for his return to the stage.
