Old Dominion Pop-up

While on the road as openers for Kenny Chesney’s Here and Now Tour, Old Dominion have been adding something special for their fans with surprise pop-up shows in small venues. On June 24, 2022, Chicago became the latest city to have an Old Dominion Pop-up show. The Chicago show was free and took place in one of Chicago’s best country bars, Joe’s on Weed St. With a capacity of 800, the show was sure to be “sold out”, so fans lined up early despite the mid-90 degree heat.

Old Dominion Pop-up – Roof Top Show

Unfortunately, with the limited capacity in the venue, everyone couldn’t get in for the pop-up show in Chicago. As a great gesture to the fans who couldn’t get in to the show, Old Dominion performed a few songs from the rooftop. While the audience waited inside, the fans outside listened to fan favorites “Make It Sweet”, “Snapback”, and “I Was On a Boat That Day”.

The crowd was pumped for the set. Old Dominion came out strong and ended even stronger and Chicago soaked up every minute of the excitement. The show lasted about 2 hours, double the set they would perform the next day at Soldier Field.

A special surprise happened when “Mr. Kenny Chesney” walked out on stage and the crowd went wild. “As you know, we’re playing in a much bigger place tomorrow… thanks to one man.” Making reference to being out past his bedtime, Chesney said, “So if I actually suck tomorrow, it’s your fault and their fault. Let’s do it!” After performing, “Save It for a Rainy Day” together, Chesney told the fans, “I can’t tell you how much I love these guys and I love this band. Thank you all for coming out to hear them. For those of you coming to Soldier Field tomorrow, we’ll see you then. Goodnight!” Then added another chorus to “Save It for a Rainy Day”.

There were so many highlights from the night, but we’ll call out these:

  • Even though, the band had an original setlist. They used it as a suggestion list. During the show, the band took requests from the audience which changed it up some. One request was “Said Nobody”
  • Story about how Shoe Shopping was formed in Chicago
  • The cover of Keith Urban, “Wild Hearts” which was performed by guitarist, Brad Tursi
  • The cover of Foo Fighters, “Learn to Fly”
  • First time performing full band version of new song “Ain’t Got a Worry”
  • The cover of John Mellencamp’s “Pink Houses”
  • Closing out the night with the intro to “Rock and Roll Part 2” into “I Was On a Boat”

In the end, it was an amazing experience that will not be forgotten. The roof top, free show, small venue, Kenny Chesney, Old Dominion, great music. I don’t think anyone could ask for more!
