Sleigh Bells and Torres at The Metro in Chicago
Torres opened the night up with a bit of a stripped down set since the last time I saw them earlier this month. Singer MacKenzie Scott took the stage with her guitar and a keyboardist this time, leaving out of the set a drummer and second guitarist. It was just as beautiful, haunting and at times angry feeling as the full band set. I have a feeling we’ll be hearing and seeing a lot more of Torres and I’m really excited about that.
Sleigh Bells is one of those bands that has been around for a while but I’ve never managed to see. They hit a lot of notes for me personally, I grew up going to hardcore shows in Florida and got to see guitarists Derek Miller’s former band, Poison the Well play quite often. They were always heavy hitters, full of chaotic energy, you’d never go to one of their shows and not move around. Growing up in the music scene there were never very many female musicians to look up to outside of pop artists. Someone like Alexis Krauss coming on the scene, a body full of energy and positivity still makes me feel so stoked.
The show was everything I hoped it would be and more. The band came out on stage fully ready to go, lights and strobes raging and the audience followed suite. Watching Torres is more of a serene experience and the shift to when Sleigh Bells took the stage was almost night and day. The dance party started the moment they hit the stage and didn’t stop until the end of the show. Krauss seemed energized by the crowd, reaching out to them and signing into the crowd throughout the set and eventually jumping into the crowd to close out their night. I went from being downstairs at the metro to the balcony and there wasn’t a still body in the venue. I loved that so much! Their energy is infectious!
If you have never seen Sleigh Bells do not miss your opportunity to do so! You can see their tour dates here.
