April 6th, 2018 was not just another “New Music Friday” for a select 200 Underoath fans. On the release day of their studio album, Erase Me, the Florida natives, came to Chicago and a “Secret Chicago Show” at Subterranean. These fans were quick enough to see the band’s Instagram story and follow the link to RSVP for the “Secret Chicago Show.” Despite the cold temperatures, fans waited as much as 6 hours Friday morning to make sure they could get passes and attend the show later in the evening. Front Row Music News was there to share in the excitement as well!

For the two time Grammy nominee, this secret performance marked a couple milestones for the band, as it was the release date of their 8th studio album, Erase Me and eight years since their last release. Additionally, this is the first release in a decade to have original drummer and vocalist, Aaron Gillespie, back in the band. (Side note: buying the album at Target gets you two exclusive bonus tracks)

Underoath opened their 45 minute set with “On My Teeth,” the debut track off Erase Me, and then dove back into “The Blue Note” off of the band’s most popular album, 2004’s “They’re Only Chasing Safety.” Vocalist, Spencer Chamberlain, kept the energy high and his strongly evolved vocals had the crowd screaming right back. The set also included live debuts of “Rapture” and “No Frame” from the new album. At one point in the evening, Spencer climbed right over me and the fans held him above their heads for the rest of the song. Although the set was short, it was flawlessly executed and left all of us wanting more. Spencer promised the band would be back in Chicago for a full performance, before ending the set with fan favorite, “Writing on the Walls.”
