Yung Gravy and bbno$ at the Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom in Chicago 2022
Baby Gravy tour
On November 22nd, 2022, Matthew Raymond Hauri and Alexander Leon Gumuchian, better known respectively as Yung Gravy and bbno$, brought their co-headlining Baby Gravy tour to the Byline Bank Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, Illinois.
bbno$
Hailing from Vancouver, Canada rapper bbno$ (baby no money) got his start in 2015 making music for fun with a group self-titled the Broke Boy Gang. It was not until 2016 that he embarked on his solo career, releasing music via SoundCloud as early as 2016 under the moniker bbnomula, gaining millions of streams and followers.
Yung Gravy
Similarly, rapper Yung Gravy from Rochester, Minnesota began putting music out on SoundCloud while getting his degree in marketing at University of Wisconsin-Madison. He earned recognition in 2017 for his song “Mr. Clean”, which gained traction on SoundCloud and is now RIAA-certified platinum.
bbno$ and Yung Gravy
Later in 2017, the two met and put out their first of many projects, the Baby Gravy EP. Yung Gravy and bbno$ have been collaborating successfully ever since, while simultaneously putting out individual work that has gone viral throughout the last five years. In October of this year, Yung Gravy released his third studio album, Marvelous, and bbno$ released his latest studio album, Bag or Die.
The Show
With a collective fan base that is representative of the childhoods that inspire their music, walking into the venue felt like stepping back into the early aughts. There were 20-somethings clad in low-rise jeans, bandana tops, and juicy couture sweatsuits as far as the eye could see. As DJ Tiiiiiiiiiip went on stage, warming up the crowd with everything from The Killers to Carrie Underwood, it was clear the night was set to be a Y2K-style rager.
Yung Gravy and bbno$ started their set off strong with one of their biggest hits, “Welcome to Chilis”. The crowd went wild and sang back every word. The artists ran around the stage, dancing on speakers and having a blast. It was clear as the girls screamed and threw their bras onto the stage, a tradition of this tour, that the fans who discovered the artists on the popular social media platform TikTok were out in full force.
As the two were co-headlining, they opted to split their set into a variety of segments. They entered the stage together and performed some of their hits before Yung Gravy walked off and bbno$ performed solo. This pattern continued throughout the evening as the duo flip-flopped on and off the stage, while DJ Tiiiiiiiiiip mixed the music. Despite the various transitions throughout the show, the party never stopped and the fans were never left unattended or uncared for.
A notable moment included when bbno$ paused his performance to check on a girl who had passed out and when every tour member passed out water to the overheated crowd. With tragic events such as Astro World still in recent memory for the public, it was refreshing to see musicians attuned and attentive to the needs of their audiences.
