Railway Gamblers at Harte’s Saloon, Evergreen Park, IL
On August 25, 2018, Chicago local band, Railway Gamblers, performed at Harte’s Saloon in Evergreen Park, IL. Having played their first show at Harte’s Saloon, the band definitely felt comfortable and at home with the crowd eager to hear them play. Getting the night started off right was a solo performance by Matt Grant, from Coyote Riot.
Out of Chicago, IL, the band classify themselves “a Cosmic Americana group” which fuses elements of folk and rock to create one unique sound. Current band members include: Brendan Folliard on lead vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica and piano; Matt Fricks on electric guitars, acoustic guitar, 12-string guitar, sitar guitar, midi keyboard, and effects; Sean Wilmsen on drums, percussion and vocals. Also, Dan Kane, who also plays lead guitar for Coyote Riot, or Joe Sexton fill in on bass guitar for live shows. Or in the case of this show, Kane did most of the bass work for the night, but Sexton swapped in to play “Diamond Road” off their 2015 release, Heart of the Sun.
Since their formation in March 2014, the group has placed an emphasis on creating original material that blends several genres, including a vibrant folk sound, bluegrass, reverbed ambient elements, and rock and roll. With the recent release on July 27 of their fourth album, Lover, a 12-track album, the band continues their ambitious mindset to consistently release new music for their audiences. The night’s set-list focused on music from Lover, include the live debut of the title song from the album. In addition, the band sprinkled in songs from each of their three previous releases: Heart of the Sun (2015), Shadow of the Moon (2016) and A Way in the Wind (2016). Railway Gamblers fans, both long time and new ones like me, were rocking late into the night (or should I say early the next day).
