On December 1, 2023, Mavis Staples brought A Concert for Justice to Cahn Auditorium at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The evening paired Staples with Chicago artist Nathan Graham and served as a benefit for the Moran Center for Youth Advocacy. From the start, the focus stayed on community, purpose, and the power of music to bring people together. While the cause mattered, the night never felt like a lecture. Having first seen him in 2020 at Get Local Beverly, it was clear how much he has grown as an artist since then. Meanwhile, the audience stayed engaged, listening closely rather than waiting for the headliner. By the time his set ended, it was obvious he wasn’t just filling a slot. He was part of the night’s larger story.

When Mavis Staples took the stage, the room shifted immediately. Her presence alone carried authority, but her voice did the real work. She moved through songs like Do It Again and Respect Yourself with confidence, letting the songs speak for themselves. Also, Handwriting on the Wall grounded the set in reflection. Meanwhile, Army of Love lifted the room, offering a moment of unity. Later, Staples delivered one of my absolute favorite songs, Can You Get to That by Funkadelic, adding groove and grit. Throughout the set, her band remained tight and supportive, allowing her vocals to stay front and center.

Before launching into Slippery People, Staples paused and addressed the crowd. She shared that the entire show was dedicated to Nathan Graham. When someone shouted, “Bring him out,” she laughed and teased him instead. She joked about his bedtime and sang his name to the audience. Unexpectedly, Graham ran onto the stage. “There he is,” Staples said. As a result, the Talking Heads cover became the night’s most memorable moment for me, blending humor, respect, and genuine connection.
