About Blu DeTiger

Bass prodigy, acclaimed vocalist and burgeoning pop icon Blu DeTiger was born and raised in NYC, where she began making music at an early age. Before it was shuttered, she took the stage at the Bowery’s legendary CBGB, singing and playing bass when she was only seven. By 17, she was a staple in the city’s creative scene – playing in a multitude of bands and building a reputation as a DJ also. Whether at a techno rave in Brooklyn or a high-profile fashion event, Blu always got the crowd dancing and was known for playing live bass during her DJ sets. In addition to honing her chops in the clubs, she spent two years at NYU Tisch’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music.

By early 2020, while also writing and producing her own music, Blu was cutting her teeth touring around the world with a variety of artists. She released her independent debut EP, How Did We Get Here?, in 2020, and has since racked up over 120 million combined global streams to date. In April 2020, her breakthrough single “Figure It Out” – which was featured on the EP and charted at AAA and Alternative radio – went viral in 31 territories, made NPR Music’s Top 40 Songs of the Year, and earned attention from i-D, Paper, Variety, Billboard, Rolling Stone, among many others. Now signed to Capitol Records, Blu recently released the irresistible “Hot Crush Lover” and collaborations with Chromeo and Biig Piig.

Blu DeTour

Blu DeTiger kicked off an extensive North American headline tour on November 3 at Royale in Boston. The run, which included tonight’s concert at the Metro in Chicago (November 8) also includes the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles (November 18). The tour will conclude with a hometown show at NYC’s Webster Hall on December 3. The Blu DeTour is her first headline tour.

The Show

After opening performances by Chicago’s own, Adan Diaz, followed by Tiffany Day, the Metro audience was ready to host Blu DeTiger’s first headline show in Chicago. Despite the show being on a Tuesday night, the crowd, which included fans of all ages, was ready for an amazing night of live music. One person in the audience caught my attention. In the front, on the rail was a young girl (I’d guess about 10 years old) holding her handmade sign and excited for Blu to come out on stage. Later in the show, she handed the sign to Blu, who showed it proudly to the audience. Another tender moment was when a father who was toward the front of the crowd had Faced his kids. Blu took a moment to look into the phone and wave to the kids. It was very sweet of her.

The Metro was a great venue for this perform. As it is smaller venue, it made for a nice intimate place to see the three piece band perform. With the drummer and the guitarist further back on each of the corners of the stage, it gave plenty of room on the stage for Blu to move around. With her moving around the stage, the audience throughout the entire venue had a great opportunity to see her performing as the “Bass Queen” she truly is.

Highlights of the night set included:

  • Started out with “Crash Course”
  • Single “Hot Crush Lover”
  • Live performance of her upbeat new single, “Elevator” which had the audience singing along, “I go up, go down”
  • MGMT cover “Electric Feel”

Near the end of the show, band intros were given. Rex DeTiger on drums and Horace Bray on guitar each performed solo sets. At this point, Blu asked if anyone knew how to play the bass. Someone spoke up and she brought Joe Cox up on stage from the audience. Joe did a great job with a groovy little solo with the band. He was very comfortable up on stage and the audience gave it up for him.

The show closed out with singles “Figure It Out” and “Vintage”.
