Dance Gavin Dance at The Fillmore in Silver Spring, MD

The chatter of conversations being spoken over the temporary in-between set music abruptly transformed into an uproar of cheering once the highly anticipated band of the night took the stage: Dance Gavin Dance. The soothing, melodic intro of “Son of a Robot” presented the band and the energy in the room was out of this world. Originating from Sacramento, California, the band has been gaining the attention of individuals since 2005. On April 11, 2019, I was lucky enough to photograph their sold out show on their Artificial Selection tour with Periphery, Don Broco, Hail the Sun, Covet and Thousand Below in Silver Spring, Maryland; which was an unbelievable experience.

Dance Gavin Dance is one of the most unique bands that I have ever had the pleasure of getting into. When experiencing their music for the first time you are wooed by the rhythmic guitar playing that honestly just makes you want to bust out your most embarrassing dance moves (Well, embarrassing for me because I cannot dance). If you’ve seen Dance Gavin Dance live, you’re aware of their clean vocalist, Tilian Pearson, and his free-flowing and effortless movements he makes all while precisely hitting every note which is quite impressive. Touring their most recent album, Artificial Selection, the guys in Dance Gavin Dance had the crowd in a constant state of movement. The audience was enlightened and nostalgic when they began playing the riff to their song “Uneasy Hearts Weigh The Most” from their 2008 self-titled album. Their setlist was a great mixture of songs that could not have disappointed anyone.

Usually when I attend show, I frequently stay towards the back to observe while also protecting my camera gear. This show was something special though. I had this constant urge to just put my camera away and join the crowd even though I never want to miss the chance to capture a good crowd shot. I couldn’t resist running into the rowdy pit and scream the lyrics along with everyone else. Dance Gavin Dance truly are incredible performers and you do not want to miss a chance to see them. Be sure to check out the remaining Artificial Selection tour dates on their Facebook page so you can catch an incredible show (https://www.facebook.com/DanceGavinDance/).
