Post Malone “Runaway Tour” at United Center in Chicago

On Tuesday, October 1st, 2019, it was a hot fall day in Chicago to kick off the month of October.  However, the United Center was set on fire by Post Malone’s debut tour in support of his album Hollywood’s Bleeding. Hollywood’s Bleeding has been topping the billboard 200’s list for three consecutive weeks. Post Malone was accompanied by Swae Lee, who collaborated with Post on the hit track ‘Sunflower.’ The song tied the record for most consecutive weeks spent in the billboard top 10 of the top 200’s list. Post also brought along up and coming rapper out of Florida, Tyla Yaweh as the opening act.

Despite the weather being in the 80’s, it did not stop the Chicago crowd from coming out in droves. As I made my way down Madison St. to the United Center, there was an evident energy in the air. Simply driving with the windows down and having “Sunflower” playing provoked a nearby group of concert goers to sing their hearts out in excitement as they walked down the street. Right then I knew this concert was going to be electrifying.

The first artist, Tyla Yaweh came onto stage. As the United Center filled in, Tyla hit the stage with palpable energy and enthusiasm. He kicked off his set with “Novacane” off of his most recent album Heart Full of Rage. Tyla, along with exposing many people to his newest album, made sure he still was able to please long time fans with two fan favorite singles, “She Bad” from 2018 and “Drugs & Pain” from 2017. Tyla frequently stopped and appreciated the Chicago crowd for “F***ing with him”. Tyla is a rising artist and lively performer, people, including myself, will be keeping an eye on him in the future.

The second act of the night was Swae Lee. As I was waiting for the start of Swae Lee’s performance, I overheard someone in the crowd say, “It’s like getting two full price concerts in one!” and I couldn’t agree more. Swae Lee, who for anyone who doesn’t already know, is one half of the rap duo Rae Sremmurd which are the geniuses behind hit song ‘Swang’. Swae busted onto the stage with “Swang” and the Chicago crowd responded in suit by getting their swang on. He followed up with “Hopeless Romantic”’ which he was featured on Wiz Khalifa’s album Rolling Papers. During the song, he tossed out roses to adoring fans who were eager to get his attention. The amazing collaborative songs did not stop there. He continued with, “No Type” (Rae Sremmurd), “Unforgettable” (French Montana), “Black Beatles” (Rae Sremmurd) as well as the closer, hit song, “Powerglide” (Rae Sremmurd). Swae besides having an amazing record with collaborative songs, he also played popular songs such as “Guatemala” and “Hurt to Look” off his newest album Swaecation. One of the three albums that makes up SR3MM. Swae was the perfect artist to get this Chicago crowd pumped to see the final act of the night.

Closing out the night was none other than Post Malone. Despite this being Post Malone’s kick off tour for his album Hollywood’s Bleeding, he really brought out all of his best songs which is an impressively long list. He began the set with the title song, “Hollywood’s Bleeding”, covered in a blanket of fog machines majestically letting the beat creep up faster and faster. He continued with many songs from the new album such as “Saint-Tropez”, “Take What You Want” (feat Ozzy Ozborne), “Goodbyes” (feat Young Thug) , “Enemies” (feat DaBaby), “Allergic”, and “Circles” just to name a few from the extremely successful album. The pyrotechnics were on point throughout the show but I recommend taking your phones out and ready to record during the end of “Take What You Want” (feat Ozzy Osborne). It is quite the display. Post Malone truly delivered it to all of his die hard fans (of which I am included). He played many of his most popular songs from the recent past including, “Better Now”, “Rockstar” (feat 21 Savage), his breakout song “White Iverson”, “I Fall Apart”, “Go Flex”, “Candy Paint” and one of my personal favorite moments of the night, the acoustic version of “Stay”. He finished the night by getting Swae Lee on stage to help him perform “Sunflower” and concluded with his second breakout song “‘Congratulations”. The United Center stage was on fire with talent on October 1st and it was not just because of the weather.
