The Tour

On the afternoon of July 28 in the sweltering heat, fans funneled into Breese Stevens Field in Madison, Wisconsin to see Jason Mraz with Wisconsin native opener Monica Martin on the latest stop of his Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride tour.

Jason Mraz

American singer-songwriter Jason Mraz got his start back in the late nineties at coffee shops in San Diego, California, putting out a handful of EPs during that time. Mraz signed with Elektra Records in the early aughts, releasing his debut studio album, Waiting For My Rocket To Come in 2002.

Since then, he has switched record labels a few times and released seven additional studio albums, having several songs such as “Lucky”, “Make It Mine” and “I’m Yours” go on to win Grammy awards or go platinum. Jason Mraz is currently on tour to promote his eighth studio album, Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride, released on June 23rd of this year. This tour is special in that it includes his ‘superband’ which consists of three-piece brass group Grooveline Horns, rock-folk band Raining Jane, and guitarist Molly Miller. For those counting, that puts at least a dozen performers on stage at a given time during Mraz’s set.

Monica Martin

Friday’s show marked Wisconsin native Monica Martin’s debut on the tour. After being introduced by Mraz on stage, she opened up the night with warm, ethereal vocals mixed in with vulnerable, genuine storytelling. This was the perfect start to an evening of musical connection and celebration.

The Show

Jason Mraz and his Superband’s set was a party from start to finish. The show consisted of hits, such as “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry)”, deep cuts like “Long Drive”, and newer songs like “I Feel Like Dancing”. Mraz interacted with the large crowd as if they were personal friends, dancing along with them, joking, and even encouraging them at one point to let loose. With each band member dancing wearing bright monochromatic outfits of colors of the rainbow, the stage radiated pure happiness. Watching families and friend groups dance barefoot around the field despite the heat, no one could keep a smile off of their faces.
